100% scanning, a compromise breaches the Republican "wall"
Shipping operators were wrong to hope that the Republican majority in the Unites States Senate would maintain a solid front. The Republican warning about the outlandish cost of $21 billion (see J.o.S. issue no. 3/2007, USA News) was unable to prevent the passage of the motion by the Democratic senators Schumer and Menendez, the staunch supporters of Homeland Security, to scan all goods crossing American borders. Even though their first motion had been rejected by the Senate, 58 to 38, on 1st March, the two Senators figured out where they could make a breach. Ancona, strike against the security plan
The Ancona case, as reported on the pages of the last issue of the Journal in an interview with Renato Morandi, threatens to become the first strike in Italy against security. On 27 April, the port will come to a standstill to protest against the security plan developed by the Port Authority for the historical harbour, i.e. the one utilised for passengers. The main concern is that it will penalise ferry traffic. All reasons and faults aside, this is an alarm warning of what may also become a security problem in the future in other intermodal transport nodes.
